ZAGREB/BRUSSELS, Feb 1 (Hina) - The Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe, Erhard Busek, will hold talks with Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader in Zagreb on Thursday, after which he will hold a news conference, Busek's spokesman Dragan Barbutovski told Hina on Wednesday.

Busek and Sanader will discuss the latest proposal by the European Commission for the establishment of a regional free trade zone involving five Southeast European countries covered by the Stabilisation and Association Process. The proposal has stirred much controversy in Croatia.

Barbutovski said that by visiting Zagreb Busek wanted to remove all speculation about the EC's proposal and answer all questions to clarify its exact meaning.

Speaking to the Austrian news agency APA in Brussels on Wednesday, Busek said that he was travelling to Zagreb to cool tempers after the EC proposed the establishment of a regional free trade zone.

Busek dismissed fears among the Croatian public that the zone could slow down the process of Croatia's admission to the EU or lead to the restoration of Yugoslavia, saying that this was "complete nonsense".

The EC's proposal has been known for a long time, Busek said, explaining that the EU could operate much more easily if it was dealing with only one free trade agreement with the countries in the region, rather than the existing 33 agreements.

APA also quoted Busek as saying that he believed the high tempers in the Croatian public were also the result of the recent transfer of General Ante Gotovina to the Hague war crimes tribunal.
