ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - The Koprivnica-based association of Homeland War veterans and widows, known by its acronym UBIUDR, with the support of 128 similar organisations from across Croatia, organised a ceremony on Wednesday at which it awarded retired Croatian Army General Ante Gotovina a certificate of merit for his contribution to the 1991-1995 war effort.

Organisers said the Croatian Homeland War Hero Award would be presented to Gotovina in the detention unit of the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, or in Croatia if he is granted provisional release.

UBIUDR president Mladen Pavkovic said that the award was not just a mark of recognition for what Gotovina had done during the war, but also an expression of support to him as a Hague tribunal detainee and to other indicted Croatian generals.

Gotovina is held responsible by the Hague tribunal for war crimes committed by Croatian forces against Serb civilians in the general area of Knin during and in the aftermath of Operation Storm in the summer of 1995.
