RIJEKA, Jan 30 (Hina) - Employees with the state-owned Jadrolinija company on Monday went on a two-hour warning strike in protest over a bill on coastal shipping lines.

About 100 workers of the largest Croatian company engaged in maritime liner transport of passengers and vehicles in the Adriatic gathered on board the 'Liburnija' ship in the seaport of Rijeka during this industrial action, organised by sailors' trade union.

The protesters urged the parliament not to adopt the bill which it is currently discussing.

Jadrolinija employees fear that the new law would mean that their company would face the same fate as the Croatia Line, another company which used to be engaged in maritime liner transport and which went into bankruptcy, with its fleet having been sold.

Representatives of the Opposition and workers in the company fear that the new law would pave the way for the privatisation of the company in line with unsuccessful privatisation models from the 1990s.

They insist on the gradual liberalisation of maritime transport and on the strengthening of local companies before the arrival of foreign competition in the shipping sector.

Warning strikes will continue to be held every day until 3 February, and they will be taking place in major ports.
