ZAGREB, Jan 23 (Hina) - The government will do everything to avoid the reduction of gas to households, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Monday answering questions about natural gas supplies given the exceptionally low temperatures.

The reduction of gas to large consumers, the HEP power utility company and the Petrokemija petrochemical industry, has not resulted in a significant drop in overall consumption, said Natasa Vujec, commercial director at INA Naftaplin.

She added the oil company appealed to households to economise with gas consumption.

Overall consumption in Croatia today was 580,000 cubic metres per hour, occasionally reaching 615,000 cubic metres.

This was about 200,000 cubic metres up from yesterday, when average consumption was 400-430 thousand cubic metres per hour. Households and the small-scale industry used 300-320 thousand cubic metres per hour yesterday and about 515,000 cubic metres today, according to INA Naftaplin figures.

Vujec said the import of Russian gas was still reduced, by five per cent, with about 120,000 instead of 131,000 cubic metres being imported per hour.
