ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - Croatian Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic has offered technical assistance to China in efforts to prevent the spreading of avian influenza from wild birds to poultry.

Cobankovic made the statement at an international donor conference on bird flu in Beijing.

During the first day of his visit to Beijing, Cobankovic held a number of meetings with his colleagues from other countries and offered technical assistance to countries in the region, the spokesman for the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry, Mladen Pavic, told Hina.

On Wednesday, the last day of the conference, Cobankovic will speak about his country's experience in fighting bird flu. Croatia is the only country in the world which has managed to prevent the spreading of bird flu from wild, migratory birds to domestic poultry.

The international conference on bird and human flu is sponsored by the Chinese government, the European Commission and the World Bank, in cooperation with the World Health Organisation, whose president Bernard Kouchner is expected to address the conference on Wednesday. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the president of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Abou Diouf, are expected to speak at the event as well.

The conference was organised in order to launch and coordinate financial assistance to combat avian influenza on the national, regional and global levels, as well as in case of a pandemic.

Experts have warned that there is no time to be lost in combating the disease which has killed nearly 80 people since 2003 and reached the Middle East and Europe.
