HSP urges government to help Hague indictees

ZAGREB, Jan 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) has sent to parliament draft conclusions binding the government to take steps to challenge indictments issued by the Hague war crimes tribunal against Croatian generals.

The HSP doubts that the government is willing to provide logistical support to the Hague indictees so that they can challenge indictments containing unacceptable allegations about the Homeland War and Operation "Storm", HSP deputy Pero Kovacevic told reporters on Thursday.

"The government is calming down the public by saying that the indictees have all the necessary documents, but the actual situation is completely different," Kovacevic said.

He went on to say that the Justice Ministry had failed to provide the defence team of a Hague indictee with the requested international agreements signed by the late President Franjo Tudjman during the 1991-1995.

The defence team of another indictee did not get a response to a request for a document whereby Croatia recognised Bosnia-Herzegovina, while a third team did not obtain a copy of an agreement between the late Bosnian Muslim leader Alija Izetbegovic and Serb leader Momcilo Krajisnik on the partition of Bosnia, which is in possession of the Croatian authorities, Kovacevic said.

The HSP suggests that the government take immediate and systematic legal, political and diplomatic measures to challenge the Hague indictments and provide full support to the indicted generals in terms of documents, information technology and logistics, Kovacevic said.

The party also proposes establishing a seven-member parliamentary commission to monitor the fulfilment of its requests and that the Council of Friends of the Hague tribunal submit to parliament a report on its work, Kovacevic said, adding that the Council had met only three times to date.

Commenting on Monday's police raid of the offices of the Croatian Association of Disabled War Veterans (HVIDRA) in Zagreb, during which journalist Domagoj Margetic and two war veterans were arrested, Kovacevic said that the police had overstepped their powers and that Interior Minister Ivica Kirin and other police officials should be called to account.
