SARAJEVO, Jan 3 (Hina) - A general of the Italian Carabinieri, Vincenzo Coppola, on Tuesday took up office as chief of the European Union Police Mission (EUPM) in Bosnia-Herzegovina to succeed police officer Kevin Carty of Ireland.

EUPM spokeswoman Zinaida Ilarija told reporters in Sarajevo that Coppola had announced his active involvement in the reform of the country's police forces and assistance to local police in investigations into large-scale and organised crime.

The reorganisation of the police forces is one of the tasks Bosnia-Herzegovina is expected to perform this year if it wants to successfully wrap up negotiations on stabilisation and association with the EU.

The existing police forces in Bosnia's two entities are expected to unite and organise into police districts crossing entity borders.

High Representative Paddy Ashdown appointed General Coppola an international representative of a commission to propose the new structure of the police.

Between 1998 and 2000 General Coppola served as a member of the Stabilisation Force (SFOR) in Bosnia and the Kosovo Force (KFOR).
