ZAGREB, Aug 13 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment against the president of the Croatian Helsinki Committee on Human Rights (HHO), Danijel Ivin, for abuse of office, Jutarnji List daily said in Tuesday's issue.

According to the daily's unofficial sources, Ivin is charged with damaging the Geotehnika company by 390,000 kuna as chairman of its supervisory board because he sold a flat in Zagreb to Zeljko Dobranovic, a former chief of President Stjepan Mesic's office, at a fourth of its market price.

Jutarnji List said the indictment charged Ivin, Dobranovic and another three people from Geotehnika. The charges pressed by the company's small shareholders, in which the contentious flat is only one of five counts, were topical in May when Ivin's election as head of HHO was disputed because of them. Ivin said on that occasion that if he was indicted, he would resign the same day.

In a statement to the newspaper, he refuted the charges, saying he would suggest to the HHO executive committee to freeze his mandate if the indictment became final. He voiced confidence the court would rule that the case be reinvestigated.

The indictment was issued in mid-July, but will become final only after the defendants lodge complaints, the newspaper said.
