ZAGREB, July 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Foreign Affairs and European
Integration Ministry has not received any official initiative for Croatia's
participation in the payment of damages to families of Libyan children
allegedly infected with HIV by Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor,
spokesman Zeljko Belaj told Hina on Sunday. The French newspaper Le
Figaro said yesterday that Bulgaria and some other countries, including
Croatia, were expected to pay a total of US$ 400 million to the families of
more than 400 Libyan children infected with HIV.
"We have no information that would confirm Le Figaro's claims," said
Belaj.
Le Figaro quoted Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libyan leader Muammar
Gaddafi, as saying that the money would be provided by international sources in
the form of debt write-offs. Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia and the Czech
Republic are the interested countries, he said, without giving further
details.
