Sanader said that he would personally support that proposal and recommend that the government give the necessary assurances just as it had in the case of other generals on trial in The Hague.
Sanader stressed that no such proposal had been put forward to the government yet and that he had read in the newspapers that Gotovina's defence team would send it later this month. "When it comes, we will inform you about it," he told reporters in Zagreb.
Asked if he thought Gotovina would be granted provisional release, the prime minister said: "We will do what I've just said and it's up to the tribunal to decide."
Asked to comment on the call by organisers of Saturday's Gay Pride parade to condemn homophobic attacks that occurred during and after the event, Sanader said he would declare his opinion after the police made a report.
