ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - About 300 people from Croatia and abroad gathered in central Zagreb on Saturday for a Gay Pride parade.

The slogan of this year's event, held under tight police security, was "the right to public visibility for LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, queer) persons".

Participants were carrying rainbow-coloured flags and balloons, and banners saying "Civil Society of Tolerance," "Nothing Is Going to Spoil This Day for Me" and "Love - Because I Deserve It."

According to organisers, the police prevented several attempts to attack the parade.

In central Ban Jelacic Square, organisers read out a proclamation, demanding, among other things, the right to full public visibility, a clear and unequivocal condemnation of all forms of homophobia, discrimination and violence against LGBTIQ persons, and the introduction of an anti-homophobia programme in all institutions, particularly in education institutions.

The proclamation also urged the media to show greater sensitivity for the rights and needs of LGBTIQ persons, called for the passage of legislation on registered partnerships, and demanded that Croatia be proactive in international politics to ensure full decriminalisation of homosexuality and transsexuality worldwide and freedom of assembly for LGBTIQ persons.

The event was attended, among others, by the head of the Government Office for Gender Equality, Helena Stimac-Radin, the Ombudswoman for Gender Equality, Gordana Lukac-Koritnik, Croatian People's Party (HNS) leader Vesna Pusic, and Italian senator Gianpaolo Silvestri.
