Sanader says vote for HDZ best investment in Croatia's future

ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - A vote for the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is the best investment in Croatia's future, the president of the ruling party, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, said at the party's 11th general convention on Saturday.
ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - A vote for the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is the best investment in Croatia's future, the president of the ruling party, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, said at the party's 11th general convention on Saturday.

Party members called for mobilisation before parliamentary elections, due in November, and on the public not to believe the "lies, slander and emptiness of the election messages" of the Social Democrats (SDP) and the People's Party (HNS).

In a 90 minute address to more than 6,000 party delegates, Sanader called on voters to choose the HDZ's policy, accusing political opponents of thinking only about who would end up being minister of what.

Speaking of the HDZ's biggest successes in this term, he said Croatia's international position was stronger, the state budget went up 30 billion kuna, the deficit was reduced from 6.3 to 2.6%, the debt owed to pensioners was being serviced, more than 300 enterprise zones and 85,000 jobs were opened, unemployment went down 10%, and GDP went up 7% in this year's first quarter.

Speaking of the HDZ's new term, he announced the "Three Times Seven" policy, which envisages a GDP growth of a minimum 7%, reducing unemployment to 7%, and seven development projects referring to reforms in the judiciary, state administration and privatisation, among other areas, the further development of the traffic infrastructure, gas supply, water supply, drainage, energy stability, a clean environment and a society of knowledge.

Sanader announced a more stable tax system without new taxes, legally enabling pensioners to work while continuing to receive pensions, and enabling young people not to pay health insurance during the first year of employment while remaining entitled to full health care.

He also announced the introduction of mandatory high school education and said the HDZ was seriously thinking about lowering the age limit for voting.

He said the HDZ would present its integral election platform, especially regarding the economy, in the autumn.

Speaking of the previous coalition government, Sanader said their biggest sins were reducing childbirth allowances and war veterans' rights, underlining that his government had given mothers and veterans their dignity back.

He announced that money would be earmarked in the budget revision for increasing unemployment benefits.

Sanader underlined that the HDZ would continue to protect state-owned land from sale, register all state property, and set up two investment funds, one for land and one for real estate.

Managers for those funds will be found through international competitions and shares will be listed on all world stock exchanges, he said, adding that health and pension insurance bureaus would be able to invest in those funds as well.

Speaking of Maestro, a recent operation which saw a number of Croatian Privatisation Fund senior officials arrested for financial wrongdoing, Sanader said to those resorting to dishonorable actions that after the operation "thieves and criminals and all those taking bribes in Croatia will no longer sleep peacefully".

He said the SDP's election programme advocated government interventionism and offered elements of socialist economy planning. He also objected to the SDP's proposal to introduce taxes on capital profit and property, legalise soft drugs and repeal the right to vote for Croatian emigrants and Bosnian Croats, reiterating that all Croatian citizens have equal rights under the Constitution.

Sanader announced a determined war on drug smuggling, pedophilia and organised crime, saying he would suggest to President Stjepan Mesic that no pardon be granted to perpetrators of those crimes.
