Asked by the press to comment on the statement Tadic made in Zagreb on Sunday, deputy spokesman Tom Casey said at the daily briefing on Monday that the United States did not see that Kosovo was setting a precedent either for the wider region or for any other place in the world.
Kosovo's circumstances are unique. The situation is being managed according to rules set by UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and we expect it to be resolved accordingly. We continue to support Ahtisaari's plan as the foundation for the establishment of an independent Kosovo, said Casey.
On Tuesday, experts at the Security Council are expected to resume consultations on the third draft of a Kosovo resolution presented last week by the US, France and Great Britain. This draft envisages 120 days for additional Belgrade-Pristina negotiations on Kosovo's status and that in case they fail, Kosovo would become independent in accordance with Ahtisaari's plan. Russian representatives are not expected to attend the consultations as Russia dismissed the third draft, like previous ones, as unacceptable.
