The NGO issued the statement on the occasion of a Southeast European energy summit that was being held in Zagreb on Sunday.
"We have no dilemmas about the vision of Croatia's energy future: all energy development resources should be used to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, and natural gas should be used as a transitional energy product until one can fully rely on renewable energy sources, which can and must be achieved by the middle of this century at the latest," the statement said.
Along with switching to new technologies and energy sources, it is necessary to maintain public ownership of the national power infrastructure, notably hydroelectric power plants, and promote the public ownership of new plants using renewable energy sources as well as development of the domestic industry.
"The position of the public on energy dilemmas is clear: surveys conducted in Zagreb and Rijeka in 2003... show that 85% of respondents support greater use of renewable energy sources, while 74.5% are willing to pay a higher price for power produced from such sources".
