Feral Tribune said in the statement that blocking the account had financially destroyed the company, adding that weekly's journalists had not received salaries in months.
The weekly also stressed that the government had written off VAT debts to the state-owned media (Vjesnik daily, Croatian Radio Television and Slobodna Dalmacija daily), and thus created an unfair market competition.
Spokesman for the government Ratko Macek told Hina that the government fully supported freedom of the media and that it was seeking solutions to the Feral Tribune crisis.
He stressed that by the end of this month the government would forward to parliament amendments to the Law on Value Added Tax (VAT) under which VAT on newspapers would go down from 22 to ten percent.
The Finance Ministry also issued a statement following the Feral Tribune crisis, stressing that its Tax Administration had not blocked the weekly's account.
