BENKOVAC, May 18 (Hina) - Croatia has so far rebuilt 142,000 family houses for returning refugees, investing over HRK 16 billion in the project, the Minister of the Sea, Tourism, Transport and Development, Bozidar Kalmeta, said on Friday at a meeting in Benkovac, inland from the central Adriatic city of Zadar.

The meeting was attended by the head of the OSCE Mission in Croatia, Jorge Fuentes, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the Central State Administration Office, local government officials, and representatives of non-governmental organisations and the Serb community.

Kalmeta told reporters that the meeting had focused on the government's efforts to create sustainable conditions for the return of refugees. He stressed that those efforts were highly valued by the international community.

The minister said that the housing reconstruction would be completed within a few months, adding that the government had invested HRK 4 billion in the infrastructure of the areas affected by the 1991-1995 war and HRK 3 billion in housing, while the HEP power company had invested over HRK 5 billion in the reconstruction of the power grid.

Practically all property claims have been settled and only 17 property restitution cases are pending, he said.

Fuentes said that the purpose of the meeting was to inform the representatives of local communities about the activities being jointly implemented by the OSCE Mission and the Croatian government.

The OSCE Mission monitors the process of refugee return, the functioning of the rule of law and war crimes trials.

Fuentes said that the Benkovac meeting was the first in a series of four or five similar meetings to take place in other areas of Croatia.
