The two-day meeting gathered police chiefs from Croatia and neighbouring countries whose citizens come to the Croatian Adriatic coast in large numbers.
"Croatia is a safe tourist destination, it has no terrorism-related problems and we cooperate with police from other countries, which is also proved by this conference," said the Croatian police chief, Marijan Benko, after Croatia's Interior Minister, Ivica Kirin, opened the event.
As we are a transit country, we want to cooperate with neighbouring countries' officials in efforts to combat the so-called Balkan route (for drug and people smuggling), Benko said.
The Austrian deputy police chief, Franz Lang, said that the safety and security of tourists in Croatia had evidently been improved.
Hungarian police official Endre Komaromi expressed satisfaction with the engagement of Hungarian policemen in Croatian resorts last summer.
During this summer season, police officers from several European countries will be assisting Croatian police in coastline resorts in communication with foreign holiday-makers.
Last summer, Hungarian policemen were the first foreign police officers to be engaged for this purpose on the Croatian coast.
According to the Croatian police, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary will each send four police officers to Croatia.
They will stay in places where tourists from their respective countries arrive in large numbers.
Foreign policemen will be wearing their original uniforms, but they will carry no firearms and will perform patrols together with their Croatian colleagues.
