Only 21 percent of respondents believe that pre-election campaign will be transparent

ZAGREB, May 15 (Hina) - Only slightly above 21 percent of Croatians believe that political parties will fund their pre-election campaigns in compliance with the law on financing political parties, according to a survey presented by the Transparency International Croatia (TIH).
ZAGREB, May 15 (Hina) - Only slightly above 21 percent of Croatians believe that political parties will fund their pre-election campaigns in compliance with the law on financing political parties, according to a survey presented by the Transparency International Croatia (TIH).

"We find this worrisome and appalling because this figure shows how low the level of public confidence in political parties is," TIH chairman Zorislav Antunovic Petrovic told a news conference in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The survey was conducted by the Promocija Plus agency among 1,300 respondents in early May.

As many as 64 percent of respondents do not believe that the law on financing political parties will be respected during the campaign before the next parliamentary elections.

Petrovic said it was encouraging that 41.8 percent of respondents said that it was important to know sources of funds for campaigns and that they would take into account those facts when deciding who they would vote for.

About 40 percent would vote for parties without paying attention to what and who funded parties.

More than 90 percent believe that restrictions should be imposed on the amounts of funds for political parties' campaigns.
