The completion of the project was marked by a on-site ceremony attended by officials from the embassies of Canada, Spain, Slovenia and the United States in Zagreb and Belgrade.
The area measured some 130,000 square metres in all, with the Croatian part measuring about 90,000 square metres and the Serbian part about 40,000 square metres. Thirty-three land mines were removed from the entire area.
The operation, carried out by the non-governmental organisation Norwegian People's Aid, cost EUR 145,000, which was covered by the governments of Canada, Spain and the United States.
According to the Croatian Mine Action Centre, about 80 square kilometres of land in Vukovar-Srijem County is yet to be cleared of mines, left over from the 1991-1995 war. Three and a half square kilometres of land is expected to be cleared this year.
