Deputy PM comments on economic platforms of HDZ, SDP and HNS

ZAGREB, May 7 (Hina) - The economic platform of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is clear and very easy to explain - economic growth rates projected to exceed six percent in the period between 2008 and 2011, and the HDZ is confident it can achieve them, Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec, who is in charge of economic affairs, said in Zagreb on Monday.

Polancec, who was attending a graduation ceremony at a private polytechnic, commented on the economic platforms of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian People's Party (HNS).

Polancec said that the SDP's economic platform was more like a wish list, its main drawback being that it did not contain an implementation plan.

Commenting on the SDP's proposal for harmonising pensions of workers who were retired before 1990 and those retired after 1990, establishing new institutions, and financing textile and footwear industries from the government budget, Polancec said that the SDP platform would cost an additional five billion kuna and that it did not contain an answer as to where those funds would be taken from.

As for the SDP's proposal to introduce capital gain tax, Polancec said that it would secure 200-300 million kuna, which was not enough for the financing of its economic platform.

Commenting on the HNS platform, Polancec said it contained some elements that were entirely in line with what the HDZ was already doing and therefore did not bring anything new.

As for the HDZ's platform, Polancec said that it was based on decreasing the budgetary deficit, thus directly affecting the overall foreign debt, which he said was the most important problem at present.

Other important elements of the HDZ's platform are development of small and medium enterprises, reduction of unemployment and addressing burning economic problems in the steel and aluminum industries and in the shipbuilding industry. The HDZ is already working to attract foreign capital, Polancec said, recalling that the national agency for the promotion of investments was coordinating more than 30 greenfield investment projects worth more than two billion euros.
