After the first free multiparty elections in Croatia, Gojko Susak became a member of the Croatian Government. From 1990 to 1991 he was the minister of emigration affairs and deputy defence minister. In 1991 he was appointed defence minister and he remained in the office until his death on 3 May 1998.
Susak was one of the closes aides of Croatia's first President Franjo Tudjman.
