Parliament speaker says Racan's death loss to Croatia

ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said on Sunday that Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Ivica Racan's death left Croatia without a significant, important and great man in political terms.
ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said on Sunday that Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Ivica Racan's death left Croatia without a significant, important and great man in political terms.

Flags have been lowered at half mast and I will sign the book of condolence that has been opened at the Sabor, Seks told the press, adding that a book of condolence would be opened at the government as well and that a commemoration would be held in parliament on Thursday.

Seks extended condolences to Racan's family, friends and the SDP.

"A man has passed away that in the last few decades left an imprint on the Croatian political stage as a statesman, as a politician, as a former prime minister and as a member of parliament. Ivica Racan was one of the four parliamentary deputies elected for five terms, from 1990 until the last election," said Seks.

He added that Racan personified the spirit of the past few decades, but also accepted the power of change.

"During the break-up of the former state, during the break-up of the then political system, he made his contribution, recognising the historical moment and the historical circumstances with his maturity, committing to and accepting the changes of the political system, the ideological changes, and acting towards the transformation of the Croatian Communist Alliance into the Social Democratic Party," Seks said, adding that Racan had also made a significant contribution to Croatia's pro-European orientation and path when he was prime minister and, more recently, chair of the national committee in charge of monitoring accession negotiations with the European Union.
