In his opening remarks the Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Antonio Mario Costa, highlighted the importance of this office in combating all forms of cross-border organised crime, corruption and terrorism and in providing technical assistance to UN member states.
Increased cooperation among UN member states and other UN bodies may contribute to the effective prevention of transnational organised crime, Costa said.
He also stressed the importance of ratification and implementation of the 13 key UN conventions concerning prevention of terrorism and conventions on organised crime and corruption.
The Croatian delegation was headed by the President of the Academy of Legal Sciences, Zeljko Horvatic.
In his address, Horvatic focused on general trends in crime prevention and the enforcement of criminal legislation, and spoke of the UN Commission's role in future activities in combating all forms of crime.
Horvatic stressed the importance of the first anti-corruption conference that took place in Jordan last year. Croatia was among the first countries to ratify the conventions adopted at that conference and it adjusted its legislation to the provisions of those conventions, he said.
Horvatic also presented Croatia's national anti-corruption programme and the results achieved so far in the prevention and criminal prosecution of corruption.
