Zagreb police said on Saturday that the seven players, aged 19-33, were strolling down Ban Jelacic Square when around 5 pm about 20 young men approached them and started hurling insults before physically assaulting them, in which they were joined by several members of the public. The Serbian players ran away and in a nearby street waited for the police, who escorted them to their hotel. The attackers fled by the time the police arrived.
The Serbian national hockey team is in Zagreb for the World Hockey Championship Division II.
