Scheffer said that NATO would not allow the security situation in Kosovo to deteriorate and that neither Kosovo Albanians nor Serbs should try to achieve their political goals through violence.
Scheffer, who was heading a delegation of representatives of 26 NATO member states, met for talks with UN civil administrator Joachim Ruecker, KFOR commander General Roland Kather, Albanian politicians Hashim Thaqi and Veton Surroi, and political representatives of the Serbian community in Kosovo.
After the talks, he held a press conference at KFOR headquarters in Pristina, where he stressed that Kosovo would not be divided and that KFOR was ready to counter any violence.
During a visit to the Serbian Orthodox monastery at Decani, Scheffer said that NATO would do all it could to protect Orthodox religious sites in Kosovo.
