Croatian PM urges lawyers of generals indicted by Hague tribunal to cooperate

BRUSSELS, March 7 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has called on the defence teams of generals Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak to cooperate after the Hague war crimes tribunal has decided that Miroslav Separovic cannot represent Markac.

"I said last week that we are not pleased with the developments between the defence teams," Sanader said in Brussels on Wednesday.

"Yesterday a decision was made that Separovic cannot defend Markac over an alleged conflict of interest. We think this is an autonomous decision of the Hague tribunal, but it definitely isn't good for Markac's defence. What I can do as prime minister is call on the defence teams to cooperate because those generals made great contributions to Croatia and are faced with one indictment, so their attorneys are simply condemned to cooperate with one another".

Sanader said that "with intensive work" it was possible for another attorney to join Goran Mikulicic, Markac's other defence counsel before the UN court, very soon.
