ZAGREB, Feb 26 (Hina) - Leaders of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the opposition Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) met at government headquarters in Zagreb on Monday to discuss current political issues and the situation in the agriculture sector, the government public relations office said in a statement.

The HDZ delegation was led by the HDZ president, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, while the HSS delegation was headed by the party president, Josip Friscic.

The meeting concluded that a bill proposing establishment of a chamber of agriculture would be sent to the next session of the national parliament for discussion and that bureaucratic barriers should be removed to speed up the sale of agricultural land to Croatian farmers who had decided to engage in intensive agricultural production.

The purpose of the two initiatives is to improve coordination in promoting the interests of Croatian farmers and ensure consolidation of farm holdings as one of the measures aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the Croatian agriculture sector.

Also discussed were issues relating to Croatia's efforts to join the European Union and NATO.
