ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on
Wednesday that the apprehension of the two most wanted war crimes fugitives,
Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic and military commander Ratko
Mladic, never depended on the will of ICTY chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte but
on the will of Serbia's leadership. "Carla del Ponte has always
insisted that Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic should be placed in the custody
of the Hague tribunal. We expect the new government in Serbia to do it," Mesic
told reporters in Zagreb when asked to comment on del Ponte's announcement on
Tuesday that she would not seek another term in office this September and her
warning that Karadzic and Mladic might remain free unless they were arrested
before the closure of the tribunal.
Mesic stressed that del Ponte was always interested in identifying the
perpetrators of war crimes and bringing them to justice.
