Speaking after a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, Barroso said it was important that Serbia continue with reforms and voiced hope that the new government would clearly prove to the Commission that Serbia was going in that direction.
The European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, who also met Moon, called on Serbia to form the new government as soon as possible.
Solana said he had discussed the possibility of forming a pro-European government by phone yesterday with Serbia's President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica. Solana added he had received a satisfactory answer.
The EU is hurrying the formation of a new government in Serbia following last weekend's parliamentary elections given that early next month UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari will propose a final solution for Kosovo's status.
Moon confirmed that he expected Ahtisaari to present his proposal in February, saying he would discuss Kosovo with him in Paris on Thursday at a donor conference on Lebanon.
