Following the incident, the chairman of the Serb People's Council and parliamentary deputy, Milorad Pupovac, arrived in the town.
The perpetrators seem to have broken into the Trinity Church during the night through the northern gate and desecrated the church by scattering objects and pulling down relics from the altar. The prayer book, one of the most valuable objects in the church, was damaged to some extent," Pupovac said.
The police said the vandals had not stolen anything.
The police are searching for the perpetrators.
Pupovac recalled that another two incidents had recently happened in northeastern Croatia.
Several tombstones were damaged in a Serb Orthodox graveyard in Kozice near the town of Virovitica.
Before that, an explosive device was planted in the town of Vocin, Pupovac recalled.
We believe that it is necessary to inform the public and make it more aware of the events so that not only the police but also the public could draw conclusions, Pupovac said.
"I do not know the reason for this act of vandalism in Koprivnica as inter-ethnic relations in this county are good. This has been confirmed by representatives of the local Serb community. Perhaps this was a result of several coincidences. Anyway, the public should be informed about it and the incident should be condemned," Pupovac said.
