Eko Kvarner generally satisfied with environmental impact study of oil refinery

RIJEKA, Jan 4 (Hina) - The environmental organisation Eko Kvarner said on Thursday that the environmental impact study of reconstruction of the oil refinery at Urinje, outside the northern Adriatic port city of Rijeka, was satisfactory and that proposed investments would ensure a substantial improvement of the existing situation.

Speaking at a press conference in Rijeka, Eko Kvarner president Vjeran Pirsic said that experts engaged by his organisation to assess the study had concluded that some of the sections dealing with the use of proposed technologies were insufficiently explained and that it failed to provide for independent monitoring.

Pirsic also cited as a flaw the fact that the study was presented on the Internet in summary form rather than through complete documents.

He said that Eko Kvarner fully supported the proposed reconstruction of the Urinje refinery, but that it thought that the whole process should be more transparent.

Croatia has two oil refineries - one at Urinje and the other at Sisak, about 50 kilometres south of Zagreb.
