President calls for thorough overhaul of pension system

ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - A difficult situation in the pension system and its poor prospects require a comprehensive reform, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said after his Social Justice Council held a meeting in Zagreb on Wednesday.

The employee/pension recipient ratio of 1.28 to 1 shows that the pension funds will be in an increasingly difficult situation, Josipovic said warning that this ratio could worsen if there were no big changes in employment.

The announced changes in the retirement system will do injustice to some of the pensioners, and people who are forced to go into early retirement due to unemployment should not be penalised, the president said.

He spoke about people aged between 50 and 60 who practically stand no chance of getting new jobs and retirement is their only solution. Josipovic lambasted plans to give those people pensions reduced by nine to as much as 20 percent.

Josipovic called for a review of pension entitlements to politicians, explaining that there were no reasons for politicians to receive pensions according to different criteria than other workers.

The council warned that the second and third pillar of the pension schemes were not functioning well.

Professor Vlado Puljic said that the biggest problem arose from the worker/pensioner ratio, adding that the number of employed people had to increase.
