Croatian leaders say Croatia to attend NATO summit as full member

ZAGREB, March 30 (Hina) - All NATO member-countries have done their part of the job regarding the procedure for the ratification of the NATO accession protocol for Croatia, and Croatia will do the remaining formal part this week and will attend the alliance's summit this weekend as a full member, President Stjepan Mesic said in Zagreb on Monday after the national committee for Croatia's NATO membership bid held a session.

Mesic said that Croatia's efforts were successful and that "NATO has embraced us as its member".

Apart from Mesic, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic participate in the work of the said national committee.

"We are particularly glad to see that we are joining the alliance on the day when NATO celebrates its 60th anniversary," Sanader said after today's session, describing NATO as a defence alliance of countries sharing common democratic values.

The summit meeting will take place in Strasbourg and Kehl on 3-4 April, and Croatia's leaders Mesic and Sanader will attend it.

Croatia will hold ceremonies to mark its admission to NATO on 7 April when Croatia's and Albania's flags will be officially raised in front of the NATO headquarters in Brussels, and when Croatia will hoist NATO's flag in front of its defence ministry building. Later that day, a special ceremony will be held in the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.

Asked by the press if Croatia would respond to the US President's call for stronger engagement of allies in Afghanistan, Sanader said that Croatia had already this year raised the number of its troops in Afghanistan from 280 to 300, and "this is our contribution".

Croatia has been contributing troops to support the International Stabilization Assistance Force (ISAF) in that Asian country since 2003.

As regards participation in international missions, Croatia will consider the matter according to its possibilities, Mesic said, adding that Croatia would make autonomous decisions on which missions it could take part in and how many troops it could send.
