Croatian President declines to comment on Glavas's guilty verdict

ZAGREB, May 9 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has declined to comment on Branimir Glavas's nonfinal guilty conviction for war crimes in Osijek in 1991, reiterating that he makes no comments on court rulings pending appeal.

Asked by reporters to comment on Glavas's nonappearance at the Zagreb County Court's announcement of the verdict earlier in the day and speculations that he fled to Bosnia-Herzegovina, President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday evening that he had no idea where Glavas was.

As long as he has (parliamentary) immunity, Glavas is a free man, Mesic told reporters during his visit to an exhibition in tribute to the 25th anniversary of the Zagreb-based Radio 101.

Asked whether Glavas, who is sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment, will be stripped of decorations and awards, Mesic said that he did not know.

"I have just heard that Glavas has been found guilty and we are already asking me (about that). I do not comment nonfinal verdicts or cases in court procedure. There will be enough time for everything," Mesic told reporters.

Glavas, a deputy of the HDSSB party in the Croatian parliament, was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment pending appeal on Friday for war crimes committed against Serb civilians in the eastern city of Osijek in 1991, while the other five defendants were given five to eight years' prison terms, also pending appeal.

A Zagreb County Court panel of judges found Glavas guilty on command responsibility in the cases dubbed Garage and Sellotape, sentencing him to five years in prison for the former and eight for the latter. He was given a single 10-year prison sentence.

Second defendant Ivica Krnjak was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, Gordana Getos Magdic to seven, while the other three accused in the Sellotape case - Dino Kontic, Tihomir Valentic and Zdravko Dragic - were each given five years.
