BELGRADE, April 28 (Hina) - Witness Tomislav Selebaj, who survived atrocities committed by Serb paramilitaries in the eastern Croatian village of Lovas in 1991, testified via video link at the trial of 14 defendants charged in the case before the Belgrade District Court on Tuesday.

Selebaj, who survived a forced passage through a mine-field, said that the first defendant Ljuban Devetak was in charge of the village while the third defendant Milan Radojcic commanded the local Territorial Defence.

Speaking about the Serb occupation of the village, Selebaj said that Croats had to mark their houses with white sheets, that they were under work obligation and were tortured in a workshop.

The witness testified from the Vukovar County Court.

The indictment alleges that during attacks on Lovas on 10-18 October 1991, the 14 accused, who at the time were members of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), local Serb Territorial Defence units and the paramilitary unit "Dusan Silni", committed war crimes by killing 70 villagers.

The trial began on 17 April 2008. The accused denied on several occasions having taken part in the torture and killing of civilians, including forcing them to walk through a minefield on 18 October 1991.
