PRISTINA, May 21 (Hina) - During his tour of Kosovo on Thursday, U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden visited the Serb Orthodox monastery of Visoki Decani in the southwest of the country and held talks with its head, Sava Janic, and other dignitaries.

Father Sava and monastery members offered shelter to everybody and I hope that this spirit will be established in the entire region, Biden said in a brief statement to the press.

The local Orthodox bishop, the ruling Bishop of the Diocese of Ras and Prizren, decided to forbid Biden's visit, but his decision was cancelled by the conference of Serb Orthodox bishops.

Later on Thursday Biden left for the U.S base Bondsteel near the eastern city of Urosevac.

Earlier on Thursday he held talks with senior Kosovo government officials and gave a speech in the national parliament.

In Pristina and other Albanian-populated areas of Kosovo, people expressed joy at Biden's visit and gratitude for U.S. efforts to help Kosovo win international recognition. On the other hand, several hundred Serbs in the northern part of the city of Mitrovica protested against the U.S. official's arrival.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on 17 March 2008.

Biden is the first U.S. high-ranking official to have visited Kosovo since its declaration of independence.

After the end of the 1999 war and offensive of Serbia's forces under the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, the then U.S. President Bill Clinton visited Urosevac in November 1999.

Two years later, President George Bush visited U.S. soldiers serving in the international peace-keeping mission KFOR in Camp Bondsteel.

On Friday morning, Biden leaves Kosovo, the last stop of his mini-tour of southeastern European countries. He first visited Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday, and was in Belgrade, Serbia on Wednesday.
