Justice Minister Ivan Simonovic said that community service was already provided for under the Misdemeanors Act and that a separate law on the performance of community service work would ensure the enforcement of that part of legislation.
The relevant magistrate's courts will be in charge of seeing to it that convicts perform community service.
Simonovic said that this would also be an anti-corruption measure, because corrupt judges would not be able to impose sanctions which they knew were impossible to be carried out.
The government also adjusted laws on legal service and notarial service to the EU standards.
Also on Thursday, the Ivo Sanader cabinet decided to allocate HRK 40 million to help purchase milk surpluses and fend off disturbances on the milk market.
Milk surpluses will be processed into butter and powdered milk.
The government also introduced into parliament a proposal that the enforcement of regulations on capital adequacy for investment companies, brought into line with the EU acquis, should be postponed from 1 July this year to 30 March 2010.
The government proposed that the bills on electronic money institutions and on credit institutions be delayed until 30 March 2010 in anticipation of new changes to European guidelines in this field.
