Spanish official says Spain and Croatia connected by Mediterranean

ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - Spain is carefully following the Croatian government's dissatisfaction with the blockade of Croatia's European Union accession negotiations, Juan Jose Lucas Gimenez, the second vice president of the Spanish Senate, said on arrival in Zagreb on Tuesday.

Gimenez is on an official visit to Croatia at the invitation of Croatian Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic.

"Spain will take over the European Union presidency in six months, and is carefully following the Croatian government's dissatisfaction with the blockade of its accession negotiations. There exists, however, a Mediterranean framework and the Mediterranean culture which connects us," Gimenez said after his talks with Bebic.

According to Gimenez, Croatia is an attractive tourist destination for Spaniards and last year 166,000 Spanish tourists visited it, and it is also attractive to Spain because of investment possibilities.

The Spanish guest invited Bebic to pay a return visit to the Spanish Senate.

"I think it would be best (for Bebic) to do it at the start of the next year when Spain assumes the Union presidency and when the Croatian Parliament's wishes (about EU entry) could become true," Gimenez said.

Bebic said Croatia was proceeding at the same pace in the implementation of reforms and the fulfilment of tasks in connection with its prospective EU membership as if there were no blockade.

Croatia's EU entry talks have been brought to a standstill by Slovenia's blockade of the negotiating process due to the Slovenian-Croatian border dispute.
