Croatian Helsinki Committee joins in support of unions' signature-collecting drive

ZAGREB, June 21 (Hina) - The Croatian Helsinki Committee (HHO) has stated that although it is aware of the impact of the global economic crisis on the social and economic circumstances in Croatia, this association offers full support to Croatian trade unions in their signature-collecting drive to get a referendum against amendments proposed by the government to the Labour Act (ZOR).

The HHO says in a statement it issued on Monday that it views referendums as the highest form of democratic decision-making by citizens and therefore this civil society organisation calls on hesitant Croatians to join in the unions' campaign for solving important issues at referendums.

The HHO says in the statement that it can understand unionists' regret at lawmakers' lack of maturity to lower the percentage of signatures required for referendums during the last change of the national constitution in parliament.

This only proves that "the political elite is more afraid of voice of the people than of its political rivals," reads the statement signed by HHO President Ivan Zvonimir Cicak.

The HHO is aware that further functioning of labour market requires changes of some principles in collective agreements but it is against the cancellation of collective agreement without the green light from all social partners.
