PM Kosor expects opening of remaining three negotiating areas by June's end

BRUSSELS, June 11 (Hina) - Croatia expects the opening of the remaining three unopened policy chapters (negotiating areas) within its accession negotiations with the European Union by the end of this month and the completion of the technical negotiations by the end of this year, Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said in Brussels on Friday after meeting European Council President Herman van Rompuy.

"We expect the opening of all three chapters by the end of the Spanish (EU) presidency, as in our opinion all requirements to this effect have been met," the Croatian premier said.

Kosor expects the Hague-based UN tribunal's Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz to acknowledge all efforts Croatia is taking in cooperation with his office in a report he is to present in Brussels on Monday. The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is scheduled to address a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

"Our goal is to wind up the technical negotiations by the end of this year and to sign our accession treaty next year," Kosor said, adding that parties were already working on the accession treaty.

Asked to comment on the Slovenian Foreign Ministry spokesman's statements about a possible blockade of the negotiating chapters on Competition Policy and Free Movement of Capital within Croatia's EU entry talks over the Ljubljanska Banka issue, Kosor said that "there will be corrections to that statement".

"There is no new blockade. As I said immediately after (Slovenia's) referendum, Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor told me that there were no more obstacles and that there were no more blockades and I, of course, believe him," she said.

Asked whether it is possible to settle the issue of Ljubljanska Banka before Croatia's entry into the EU, Kosor said that "everything is possible".

"If we succeeded in finding a solution to the border issue which had not been tackled for 18, 19 years, then we can settle all other issues," Kosor said, adding that this matter should be dealt with at talks between the two governments.

The Croatian premier said that Van Rompuy would visit Zagreb on 5 July.
