University of Split marks 50th anniversary

ZAGREB, 14 June (Hina) - The 50th anniversary of the University of Split was celebrated on Friday with a formal ceremony at the Croatian National Theatre, where Prime Minister Andrej Plenković was presented with a charter as a sign of gratitude for his contribution to the University.

Receiving the charter, the prime minister said that the goals can be achieved through joint efforts, and that the University of Split still has a friend and partner in the government. Talking about the charter, he said that he saw it as a motive for the government to continue helping the University of Split.

Plenković said that in the past years the cooperation had also been successful and to the satisfaction of the University of Split.

Speaking about investment in education, he said that this year's budget for education and science totalled €3.8 billion. "We are currently in the cycle of the largest investments in the Croatian education system. We want to take advantage of this momentum of never higher employment and never lower unemployment in Croatia. Young people not only acquire good education foundations, but also through higher education they acquire knowledge according to the most advanced models," said Plenković.

Minister of Science, Education and Youth, Radovan Fuchs, said that this was a great jubilee. In its 50 years of existence, the University of Split has made tremendous strides in study programmes, in the quality of studies and in the number of students, he said.

Rector Dragan Ljutić said that the Croatian nation had had its roots in education in Split 10 centuries ago and that today "we were the heirs of those values".

Mayor Ivica Puljak, too, expressed pride in the cooperation between the city and the university, noting that partnership was key to using the full potential. Investing in knowledge and education is a strategic move by the city of Split, which rewards student excellence for the first time, he said.

Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban also congratulated the University of Split, saying that this institution is a pillar of the development of the county, as well as that students are the future of development.

He pointed out that the European Universities Games, hosted by Split, will be an incentive for investments in the city and the county, and it is up to them to use the golden potential of students for the benefit of the population.
