Participating in the event are 30 researchers and archaeologists from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Serbia, including Croatian archaeologist Aleksandar Durman, who has dedicated his whole career to the research of the Vučedol culture, discovering numerous valuable finds from the period of that culture dating back to around 3000 BC, including the Orion vessel, found at a locality in Vinkovci, which was determined to represent the oldest Indo-European calendar.
Durman said that Vučedol was a response to the Egyptian pyramids.
"The Vučedol culture at its peak here was the highest level of European civilisation 5,000 years ago," he said.
The head of the Vučedol Culture Museum, Mirela Hutinec, thanked all researchers of the Vučedol culture in Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro and other regions influenced by the Vučedol culture.
Zdenka Predijevac, head of the Conservation Department of the Ministry of Culture and Media in Vukovar, said that the ministry had invested significant funds in the Museum of the Vučedol Culture and in the archaeological works.
"That programme was implemented from 2005 to 2015 and was financed with funds from the Council of Europe Development Bank and the Croatian government in the amount of some HRK 70 million, while HRK 15 million of national funds was used to finance the Museum's permanent exhibition," Predijevac said, noting that the construction of the Vučedol Archaeological Park was continuing and that HRK 118 million had been secured for that project, expected to be completed in the next two years.
