The 19-year-old girl from Kaštela was one of the two Croatians at this competition, and the other was 31-year-old Josip Tonžetić, who finished seventh in the men's -60 kg event.

Jelena's older sister, Lucija Brešković, was the first Croatian female competitor in the judo in Paralympic Games. In the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Lucija Brešković was defeated by Venezuelan Naomi Soazo in the match for the bronze in the women's -70 kg.
