"To live in this place today, in Southeast Europe, and not use the opportunity you had to become a member of broader organisations, of the European Union, is a historic mistake. Those are opportunities which occur in some historical process and history does not give two opportunities," Komsic told reporters in Sarajevo.
He said Bosnia would have to wait for another opportunity for a number of years because of the elections in the EU and enlargement fatigue and, in the meantime, have to solve disputes related to the implementation of a European Court of Human Rights ruling in the Sejdic-Finci case which requires amendments to the Constitution and electoral legislation so that minorities could be elected to the highest offices.
Failure by the leading political parties to agree on the enforcement of the ruling has halted Bosnia's progress to the EU. Komsic does not believe that agreement will be reached in 2014 with the European Commission's brokerage, saying this will further isolate Bosnia over the next two years.
