The European Union is co-financing the project with EUR 35.5 million.
Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina said Vukovar and Croatian Waters could not have received a better Christmas gift than this project. "Vukovar is loved, Vukovar is defended, Vukovar is respected not by smashing (bilingual) signs, but by preparing projects, attracting funds, creating jobs and developing this beautiful town."
After Osijek and Porec, Vukovar is the third Croatian town with such a project since Croatia joined the EU on July 1. Nearly EUR 4.5 billion will be available for such projects until 2023.
Vukovar Mayor Zeljko Sabo said the project would provide two-thirds of the Vukovar area with water supply and sewerage. He said the project was important for environmental protection as well as for development because the entire construction industry of the county would be hired for its realisation.
