PM says opposition leader inconsistent, lost

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Dec 22 (Hina) - Social Democratic Party (SDP) president and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Sunday commented on opposition leader Tomislav Karamarko's statement that his Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) would request an early election in May, saying the HDZ president was "inconsistent and lost" and that there was no system to his statements.

"The dear colleague is so inconsistent and lost that it makes no sense to comment on it. He changes his position by the day, even on the referendum," Milanovic said in Split when asked by the press to comment on Karamarko's statement yesterday that he would request that an early parliamentary election be held together with a European Parliament election in May 2014.

Milanovic said he was not mocking but that there was no system to Karamarko's statements. "In a month he will ask that Christmas should replace Easter or something like that."

Every country needs an alternative but "the HDZ isn't it," he added.

Asked to comment on a Constitutional Court ruling to revoke a government decision to impose a work obligation on striking hospital doctors, Milanovic said the decision was made by the government and not the Health Ministry. "We got the clearance, the green light, from the Legislation Office, from the legal services where lawyers work who understand the matter just as the constitutional judges do, but the Constitutional Court is above, so you must respect whatever it decides."

Milanovic said the government did not make the decision hastily. "Our political position was that after two months of a quasi-strike, citizens should be provided with quality health care," he said, adding that to the government, citizens' right to health care was more important than the right to strike.

He said he could only accept the Constitutional Court's ruling. "That's the order of things. Parliament adopts laws, the government runs the country and the home and foreign policies, and the Constitutional Court, when someone applies to it, gives a ruling, a decision, and you have to act on it."

Milanovic was in Split to attend an election convention of the SDP's Split-Dalmatia County branch.
