Croatian medical experts to teach Botswana students, doctors

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Nov 26 (Hina) - The University of Botswana and four Croatian medical institutions on Tuesday signed an agreement on cooperation which will enable Croatia to export the knowledge and skills of its medical experts for the first time and enter the fastest growing economy in Africa, it was said at the signing ceremony.

Experts of the Osijek Medical School, the Andrija Stampar Public Health Institute, and two Croatian hospitals will educate Botswana students and doctors, mentor their scientists and teachers, and develop joint academic programmes and projects, cooperation coordinator Dragan Primorac said.

Botswana is the key state for entering the Southern African Development Community market of 15 states and about 250 million inhabitants.

Primorac said Croatian institutions were the third after US and British institutions to cooperate with Botswana in medicine.

The head of the Andrija Stampar institute, Zvonimir Sostar, said Botswana had a US$ 7 billion surplus and that large world industries had decided to move their plants there because Africa was the future.

People's health is very important for every state. We want to have the best and most developed health possible and are glad that our government has recognised Croatia and its experts, said Thabo Fakom, head of the University of Botswana.

The university has an annual budget of $130 million. It has one medical school with 300 students enrolling every year. Botswana's health system employs 18,000 people.

The UN estimates that the most developed countries will invest more than $100 billion in Sub-Saharan Africa, where Botswana is located, by the end of 2014.

Botswana has invested $2 billion in the education of its experts in various foreign institutions. The country has a high percentage of HIV-positive persons.
