The Month Against Addiction in Croatia is observed from November 15 to December 15.
Girls in Zagreb drink more than elsewhere in Croatia, Marina Kuzman of the Public Health Institute said, adding that this was because they wanted "to be more equal," they grew sooner and wanted to appear more serious and grown up.
As for drug abuse, Kuzman said the situation in Croatia was "fairly good". The number of people in the system is increasing by the year, including heroin addicts, but the number of heroin addicts is down.
Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic underlined the "epidemic" increase in the number of alcohol, gambling and Internet addicts.
Velimir Tisma of the Zagreb police said more than three kilos of heroin were seized in the capital in the first ten months of the year, up 61% from the same period in 2012.
Also seized were more than four kilos of cocaine, up 134% on the year, more than 100 kilos of marijuana and 796 grammes of amphetamine. Five dealers more than in the first ten months of 2012 were arrested.
The Month Against Addiction in Croatia is held to raise public awareness of all types of addictions, especially drug abuse, and encourage everyone in society to jointly fight addiction and drug abuse.
