Banks' gross profits drop 30.7 pct year-on-year

ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - Banks in Croatia made HRK 2.14 billion in earnings before tax in the first nine months of 2013, according to data on 30 banks as of September 30, released by the central bank on Friday.

This was 30.7 per cent less than data on 32 banks released at the same time last year.

The assets of the 30 banks currently active in Croatia totalled HRK 403.9 billion at the end of September, 10.1% more than at the end of 2012.

The average Capital Adequacy Ratio was 21.26%, as against 20.48% at the end of September 2012.

Seventeen banks posted gross profits, while 13 posted losses totalling HRK 126.1 million.

Zagrebacka Banka again led in gross profits with HRK 862.5 million, down 20.4% on the year, followed by Privredna Banka Zagreb with a 1.1% increase to HRK 754.1 million, Raiffeisenbank with HRK 240.6 million, down 40% from September 2012, and Erste & Steiermaerkische with HRK 188.4 million, down 61% on the year.

Those four banks, all owned by foreigners, account for 95.6% of all gross bank profits, as against 88% at the end of September 2012.

The state-owned Croatian Postal Bank earned HRK 74.2 million before tax, up 2.8% on the year.
