First Europe Direct info centre opened in Croatia

Autor: half
KARLOVAC, Oct 29 (Hina) - Europe House opened in Karlovac on Tuesday the first of ten Europe Direct information centres in Croatia and the one in Karlovac is the 500th such centre in the European Union.

The second such centre in Croatia will be opened in Slavonski Brod on Wednesday, followed by Nova Gradiska and Dubrovnik.

Member of the European Parliament Zdravka Busic said she expected the Karlovac centre to raise citizens' awareness that they were indeed part of the European community and that they could influence the adoption of EU laws, but also that they must respect them.

She hoped the centre would prompt citizens to vote in the next European Parliament election as well as apply for cohesion funds.

The head of the European Commission's office in Croatia, Branko Baricevic, said the info centre would provide, among other things, information about education possibilities, youth employment, and hospital treatment in any of the EU's 28 members.

Last week, the European Council adopted a programme of youth employment initiatives. Baricevic said the national governments would have to draw up national programmes, but also be able to use other models.

"The objective is to have access to the solutions of Austria or the Netherlands for example, where youth unemployment is low, and to involve young people in various processes in the early stage of unemployment. There are initiatives under which a person must be put in the labour process within four months of graduation at the latest to gain the experience necessary for employment," said Baricevic.
